A joint anti-organized crime operation launched by police forces Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau two months ago has resulted in more than 1,000 people being arrested.
According to a report from local radio and television broadcaster Teledifusao De Macau, the campaign targeted cross-border crimes such as loan sharking, prostitution and illegal immigration allegedly run by organized criminal gangs.
The broadcaster reported that in excess of 7,000 police officers had been involved in the operation, which saw officials conduct some 760 checks at Macau casinos, massage parlors and other entertainment venues.
As a result, over 1,000 cases of loan-sharking were discovered by police along with some 70 instances of illegal imprisonment with almost 1,100 people arrested alongside close to 1,000 repatriations.
