Internationally-renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has announced that he is partnering with SJM Holdings Limited to open a 270-room branded hotel inside the Macau casino operator’s coming Grand Lisboa Palace development.

According to a report from The Guardian newspaper, the new Chanel-themed hotel is to be located in one of the $3.9 billion Grand Lisboa Palace’s 20-story towers with the 83-year-old stating that he is also “in the process of studying other opportunities to open other properties around the world”.

“An entire hotel designed by me,” read a statement from Hamburg-born Lagerfeld. “It’s the first time for me. I think the idea is great.”

The German has previously collaborated with Monaco’s Metropole Hotel and the Hotel De Crillon in Paris on exclusive luxury rooms but The Guardian reported that the Macau venture is set to involve his company designing the entire look of the hotel. He will be following the example of rivals including Armani, Bulgari and Versace, which have premiered properties under their own names, while leading fashion houses from Dior to Diane Von Furstenberg have developed a lucrative sideline designing suites and other hotel interiors.

Lagerfeld serves as a chief designer for the Chanel and Fendi fashion houses and has also designed a can for Diet Coke with the coming hotel inside the Grand Lisboa Palace due to be developed under his own Karl Lagerfeld Greater China brand.

Expected to open around March of next year on the Cotai Strip, the 2,000-room Grand Lisboa Palace is additionally due to encompass casinos, restaurants and other hotels including one themed on the Versace fashion label following an announcement by SJM Holdings Limited in September.
